Slumflower: From the Brothers of Street Etiquette

Artist Statement ///

SLUMFLOWER started out as a seed idea that we had about two years ago, about the misconceptions formed about public housing. The story is centered around a 10-year old boy finding beauty and growth in the midst of concrete.

Growing up watching video like Spike Lee’s “Clockers” (1995) or Nas’ “Nas is like” (1999)  I’m positive SLUMFLOWER wasn’t the image urban planner Robert Moses had in mind while planning the design and placement of public housing during 1950s New York City.

People tend to say that fashion, though artistically driven, is simply surface and incapable of expressing anything socially or politically mind bending – that the fashion lens puts a hyper focus on just looks and consumerism. We like to think an editorial like this provides an alternative to that idea.

It’s always been a mission of ours to tell a story through our editorials and brand – preferably one people haven’t heard of before. We were perfectly aware that the sight of twenty some odd immaculately dressed gentleman – and a baby faced cute kid – would lure people in. At the end of the editorial – and eventually the film – there are obvious questions to be asked, statements to be made, conversations to be had with varying opinions. But I guess that’s what art and creation is all about.

As the granddaughter of a barber and highly successful business man, I was excited to hear about this film. The Fade: A Clean Cut Documentary, follows four barbers from four different continents. The film examines their stories, and compares their experiences as black men throughout the diaspora.

For the black community, a barbershop is more than just a place to get a haircut. Barbershops are community landmarks, and cultural breeding grounds. It’s exciting to see someone go in depth, and examine their importance. The film has won several film festival awards and is gaining so much exposure.

FYI Johnny “Cakes” Castellanos; Jay Z and Pharrell’s barber is featured in the film as well.

Below is a trailer and link for more information.

Check-check-check it out.

A Moonrise Kingdom Fashion Safari

When I saw Susie Bubble post photos of the Orla Kiely presentation for Fashion Week, I knew right away that the Irish born designer channeled Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom to interpret her spring line. I would describe Orla Kiely’s line as sophisticated Girl Scout swag. Check out some of the looks below and watch one of my favorite scenes from the movie.

Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners

Image

I heard a radio interview the other day with the uber talented Ms. Jada Pinkett-Smith where she was talking about some controversy she started on Facebook last week when she asked if magazines targeted towards Black women would ever have a white woman on the cover. As interesting and provocative as that is, this post isn’t about that. This post is about what Ms. Jada spoke about after the Facebook drama- her involvement with a documentary by Shola Lynch called “Free Angela Davis and All Political Prisoners.” I was super excited!

I  was first introduced to Angela Davis in high school but I didn’t really know about Angela Davis until I became an adult and really did serious research on her and the Black Panther Party. I learned who she was as a woman, teacher, scholar and not just a radical with a gorgeous Afro.

Lynch’s documentary centers around the 1970 trial where Angela Davis was accused of kidnapping, conspiracy and murder. Considered a terrorist at 26 years old, her story is nothing short of incredible. The film opens today and I suggest everyone go out and show support. I have no doubt it will be incredible. Below is link to a really good article on the film. Check it out.
